Many programmable construction systems:
- are expensive.
- are closed platforms.  
- have steep learning curves.   
- require inflexible cables or soldering.
- require batteries.
- are discontinued.

Our challenge is to develop a basic programmable construction system that:

1. costs less than $100 / project.
2. can be used with many construction systems and software applications.
3. enables playful, engaging BIY-style robotics projects to be built relatively quickly by kids ages 8+.
4. can be powered by USB ports or AC/DC adaptors or 9V batteries.
5. has a reliable supply channel.

This development effort focuses on a motor/gear assembly controller.  Another development effort will focus on mechanical modules from commonly found parts that can be driven by the motor controller.
